Since 1996, the Special Collections and Archives has been dedicated to preserving and collecting materials for Archives on the History of Christianity in China. This exhibition showcases our latest acquisition, the Maurice Hutton Family Collection, featuring an extensive array of historical photographs, rare books, as well as captivating missionary posters and tracts.
Maurice H. Hutton, an Australian missionary of the China Inland Mission (CIM), committed his life to serving ethnic minority communities in Panghai, Guizhou, in the early 20th century. His most notable achievements were the development of scripts for the Black Miao (Hmu) and Keh-Deo (Gejia) communities allowing them to read Bibles in their own languages.
The life of Maurice Hutton has left us with invaluable evidence, allowing us to peek into the lives and work of CIM missionaries in China during challenging times. Beyond enhancing our understanding of the intricate history of Christianity in modern China, his legacy offers rare and significant insights into the languages and cultures of the Black Miao and Keh-Deo communities.
