English Proficiency Tests (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.): Home

Suggests tools and resources to help students prepare for IELTS, TOEFL, and more

Welcome to the English Proficiency Tests library guide!

When learning English as a second or foreign language, you will sometimes need to be able to prove your English ability level. For example, if you want to study or work overseas and you are not a native speaker of English, you might be required to present the results of an English proficiency test as proof of your English skills. Such requirements are commonplace in countries like Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

There are several English proficiency tests to consider, and they serve slightly different purposes. The most widely recognized tests for English are IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English exams and Duolingo English Test. This guide provides links to sources that will help you to prepare for the IELTS, TOEFL and other common English proficiency tests.

What test should you take?

Which test should I take?

When deciding which English proficiency test you need to take, the most important thing is to look at the requirements at the institutions to which you are applying. Which test do they accept or require? Some institutions might not accept all tests.

Once you are clear about the institutional requirements, you can decide which English proficiency test best fits your needs.
