SPSS: Learn SPSS

Learning resources for SPSS

Learning materials

 Video tutorials

The Library produced short Cantonese tutorials and organized workshops on SPSS and has subscribed to Linkedin Learning (former Lynda.com) and SAGE Research Methods Videos which provides SPSS online courses and tutorials. Of course, we also have books! There are also free websites you can use to learn SPSS.

Data Software Workshops

This recorded workshop is one of the Library's data software workshops, it talks about SPSS and also Tableau.

In this video, the trainer Timothy demonstrates how to use SPSS to analyze data, and how to use Tableau for data visualization.

Linkedin Learning

Formerly Lydna.com, Linkedin Learning has over 5,000 courses focused on business, technology, and creative skills. Each course is developed and led by experts, and the platform will provide you with recommendations based on your interests. The videos come with subtitle and transcript where you can easily refer to.

Note that you need to have a Linkedin account to access the platform, and you can use your personal one.

Here are two SPSS courses in Linkedin Learning and the platform also offers many tutorials on statistics, have a look!

  SPSS Statistics Essential Training

> Course description

SPSS Statistics is a statistics and data analysis program for businesses, governments, research institutes, and academic organizations. In this course, Barton Poulson takes a practical, visual, and non-mathematical approach to SPSS Statistics, explaining how to use the popular program to analyze data in ways that are difficult or impossible in spreadsheets, but which don't require you to master programming languages like Python or R. From importing spreadsheets to making data visualizations to calculating descriptive statistics, Barton covers all the basics, with an emphasis on clarity, interpretation, communicability, and application. This course is ideal for first-time researchers and those who want to make the most of data in their professional and academic work.

> Learning objective
  • Making data visualizations
  • Creating regression variable plots
  • Importing data and recoding variables
  • Computing frequencies and correlations
  • Reliability analysis
  • k-means clustering
  • Decision tree classification
  • Analyzing data

  SPSS for Academic Research

> Course description

Explore how to run tests for academic research with SPSS, the leading statistical software. In this course, Yash Patel dives into SPSS, focusing on how to run and interpret data for the most common types of quantitative tests. Topics include t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and understanding the statistical measurements behind academic research. Review the tenants of qualitative testing, including the central theorem, P values, and confidence intervals, and specific use cases for tests in SPSS. For each type, Yash provides some general guidelines and assumptions, along with a challenge and solution exercise to practice what you've learned.

> Learning objective
  • Quantitative vs. qualitative analysis
  • Sample size considerations
  • Normal distribution
  • Estimating the population mean
  • One-sample t-test
  • Paired-sample t-test
  • One-way and two-way ANOVA
  • Repeated measure ANOVA

Besides SPSS, Linkedin Learning has a lot of short courses and videos on understanding statistics. Once you have completed a Linkedin Learning course, you can showcase your achievement in your Linkedin profile!

SAGE Research Methods Video

SAGE Research Methods Video includes hours of tutorials, interviews, video case studies, and mini-documentaries covering the entire research process. The video collection covers hundreds of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. Videos are segmented and are provided with the transcript.

Here are two video series on SPSS.

The link above will take you to the first episode 1 of the series. To watch the other episodes, click "Related Content" or simply search the series title on the platform.
