Course Enhancement Funds @ HKBU

This fund supports teaching staff to co-design course enhancement with librarians with the goal to address and enrich students’ information literacy.

The designed course enhancement will be implemented within the subject or in an interdisciplinary context to address the information literacy needs of students. These enhancement may include, but are not limited to:

• Create tailor-made online learning objects (e.g. interactive tutorials, quizzes) for specific skill sets 
• Design competitions and/or games (e.g. 3D virtual world, augmented reality) to encourage better student efforts in their course assignment/project 
• Make use of specialized tools/software/platforms (e.g. data visualization tools, new presentation tools, wikis) to enhance the creation and/or consumption of information by students
• Organize special events and/or trips to have hands-on application of skill sets outside of the traditional classroom 
• Provide a series of tailor-made workshops designed to actively engage students in skill development

This funding opportunity is made available through the UGC Teaching & Learning project on Information Literacy which is currently taking place across eight universities in Hong Kong.

In total, this UGC project has five core sub-projects:

1. Assessment of information educational needs of undergraduate students 
2. Research Readiness Self-Assessment (RRSA-HK) questionnaire instrument 
3. Shared online Information Literacy (IL) courseware 
4. Capacity Building Programme for librarians of JULAC libraries 
5. Course Enhancement Funds

Information Literacy

According to the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL)'s Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, information literacy can be described as:

Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.

As an integral part of the learning process, information literacy is crucial to students' academic performance and whole person education, which is also a skill recognized by the University's Graduate Attributes. Information literacy education is a catalyst to transform the information society of today into the learning society of tomorrow. 

Information Literacy Standards & Framework developed by ACRL

The UGC Information Literacy Project draws heavily on the information literacy standards and framework developed by ACRL. Proposed course enhancement should align with these practices and dispositions.

Information Literacy @ HKBU Library

At HKBU Library, we fully support academic excellence at the University through delivering information literacy instructions. Each year, librarians teach over 300 information literacy instructions sessions and we are thriving to equip students with the practical skills, analytical abilities and attitudes that are necessary for finding and using information.
