As the end of the semester approaches, the Library is working to ensure the best possible study environment. Part of this effort is to make sure that our study spaces are shared fairly. As described in Part 1, occupation of seats with personal belongings has become a major problem.
Therefore, starting 21 November and running through the examination period, we will be operating a system to help ensure spaces are not occupied for prolonged periods. Here's how it will work:
1. Security guards will issue a notice (like the one on the right) when they observe that a study space is occupied by personal belongings. A note will be made of the time of issue.
2. If after one hour Library staff find that the owner has not returned and the notice and the belongings are still there, they will remove the items in order to free the space for other users. Note that the grace period means that you can safely search the shelves or visit the washroom without risk of losing your space.
I do regret that it has been necessary for the Library to introduce such measures. However, space is at a premium and we must ensure fairness in making it available. Some students have complained to us that they have seen spaces in the Library occupied for several days with the same personal items. This is obviously very unfair, and our new procedures will eliminate such cases.
