Getting to grips with the Library's new 3D printing service

You may come to the Library to print your lecture notes, but have you tried to print out something 3D in the Library? :-)

Now that we have this new 3D printing service in-house, I decided to give it try by printing out something fun and also practical. The inspiration came while reading a blog post by Joe Hardenbrook (the Mr. Library Dude Blog) on his design of a "READ" business card holder.

The original model is made publicly available and customizable with a Creative Commons license over a 3D design platform called Tinkercad. So, I created an account in Tinkercad, saved a copy of his original design and then further adapted it by applying the Library logo to the "book cover". Voila! The final product here:

The pricing for the filament is HK$1 per 200 mm. In my case, the cost came to HK$57. Tinkercad is a great tool for creating simple designs from scratch, and you can also quickly modify existing designs in the gallery. You can download your file in .stl format once you’ve finished designing, and then send it to the Library’s 3D Printing Service for printing.

On a side note, I have also made my printing file available to use on Tinkercad.

Have fun and make your own :-)
